Self-sufficiency.  Permaculture.  Self-reliance. Homesteading.  Living off the grid.  No matter the name, American history is full of dreams of those wanting to carve out their own place and live off the fruits of their own labors.

In an odd way, it seems those seeking to support themselves often contribute the most to community.  Perhaps they truly understand no man is an island.
